New Book Releases – 03 May 2022

Hola, Book Dragons, new book releases today!

Synopsis:
In Charlie Hall’s world, shadows can be altered, for entertainment and cosmetic preferences—but also to increase power and influence. You can alter someone’s feelings—and memories—but manipulating shadows has a cost, with the potential to take hours or days from your life. Your shadow holds all the parts of you that you want to keep hidden—a second self, standing just to your left, walking behind you into lit rooms. And sometimes, it has a life of its own.
Charlie is a low-level con artist, working as a bartender while trying to distance herself from the powerful and dangerous underground world of shadow trading. She gets by doing odd jobs for her patrons and the naive new money in her town at the edge of the Berkshires. But when a terrible figure from her past returns, Charlie’s present life is thrown into chaos, and her future seems at best, unclear—and at worst, non-existent. Determined to survive, Charlie throws herself into a maelstrom of secrets and murder, setting her against a cast of doppelgangers, mercurial billionaires, shadow thieves, and her own sister—all desperate to control the magic of the shadows.
With sharp angles and prose, and a sinister bent, Holly Black is a master of shadow and story stitching. Remember while you read, light isn’t playing tricks in Book of Night, the people are.
Synopsis:
When she was young, Arya Roth became best friends with her housekeeper’s son. Soon, friendship turned to young love, and when Arya dared him to kiss her, a chain reaction of disastrous events led to the boy being sent away and out of Arya’s life.

Hey, Book Dragons! Got some new releases today. Happy Book Birthday to these beauties!

1. Playing with Fire – L.J. Shen

Blurb:
A broken boy on the path to destruction.
A scarred girl without direction.
A love story carved in secrets, inked with pain and sealed with a lie.
Grace Shaw and West St. Claire are arctic opposites.
She is the strange girl from the food truck.
He is the mysterious underground fighter who stormed into her sleepy Texan college town on his motorcycle one day, and has been wreaking havoc since.
She is invisible to the world.
He is the town’s beloved bad boy.
She is a reject.
He is trouble.
When West thrusts himself into Grace’s quiet life, she scrambles to figure out if he is her happily-ever-after or tragic ending.
But the harder she pushes him away, the more he pulls her out of her shell.
Grace doesn’t know much about anything beyond her town’s limits, but she does know this:
She is falling in love with the hottest guy in Sheridan U.
And when you play with fire—you ought to get burned.

2. Horrid – Katrina Leno

Blurb:
Following her father’s death, Jane North-Robinson and her mom move from sunny California to the dreary, dilapidated old house in Maine where her mother grew up. All they want is a fresh start, but behind North Manor’s doors lurks a history that leaves them feeling more alone…and more tormented.
As the cold New England autumn arrives, and Jane settles in to her new home, she finds solace in old books and memories of her dad. She steadily begins making new friends, but also faces bullying from the resident “bad seed,” struggling to tamp down her own worst nature in response. Jane’s mom also seems to be spiraling with the return of her childhood home, but she won’t reveal why. Then Jane discovers that the “storage room” her mom has kept locked isn’t for storage at all–it’s a little girl’s bedroom, left untouched for years and not quite as empty of inhabitants as it appears….
Is it grief? Mental illness? Or something more…horrid?

3. Chance of a Lifetime (Providence Falls #1) – Jude Deveraux, Tara Sheets

Blurb:
In one century she loved him madly, and in another she wants nothing to do with him
In 1844 Ireland, Liam O’Connor, a rogue and a thief, fell madly in love with a squire’s daughter and unwittingly altered the future. Shy and naive Cora McLeod thought Liam was the answer to her prayers. But the angels disagreed and they’ve been waiting for the right moment in time to step in.
Now Liam finds himself reunited with his beloved Cora in Providence Falls, North Carolina. The angels have given Liam a task. He must make sure Cora falls in love with another man—the one she was supposed to marry before Liam interfered. But this Cora is very different from the innocent girl who fell for Liam in the past. She’s a cop and has a confidence and independence he wasn’t expecting. She doesn’t remember Liam or their past lives, nor is she impressed with his attempts to guide her in any way.
Liam wants Cora for himself, but with his soul hanging in the balance, he must choose between a stolen moment in time or an eternity of damnation.

4. Watch Over Me – Nina LaCour

Blurb:
Mila is used to being alone. Maybe that’s why she said yes to the opportunity: living in this remote place, among the flowers and the fog and the crash of waves far below.
But she hadn’t known about the ghosts.
Newly graduated from high school, Mila has aged out of the foster care system. So when she’s offered a job and a place to stay at a farm on an isolated part of the Northern California Coast, she immediately accepts. Maybe she will finally find a new home, a real home. The farm is a refuge, but also haunted by the past traumas its young residents have come to escape. And Mila’s own terrible memories are starting to rise to the surface.
Watch Over Me is another stunner from Printz Award-Winning author Nina LaCour, whose empathetic, lyrical prose is at the heart of this modern ghost story of resilience and rebirth.

Book Review: Pretty Reckless (All Saints High #1) – L.J. Shen

Rating: 4/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance (contains Explicit Content)

Review:

When I started this book, I didn’t know what I was getting into. By now I’ve gotten used to L.J. Shen’s writing style and her story types. But the last couple of her books that I read were a bit of a letdown so I thought this one would be as well. Continue reading “Book Review: Pretty Reckless (All Saints High #1) – L.J. Shen”

Book Review: Ruckus (Sinners of Saint #2) – L.J. Shen

Rating: 2/5 🌟🌟

Genre: Contemporary Romance (contains Explicit Content)

Review:

I really wanted to like Ruckus but similar to Vicious, I found myself struggling to find good in it. I liked the thought of Dean and Rosie together. They fit together.

What annoyed me were all the misunderstandings. How much time got wasted because of it. Also, reading Ruckus made me really dislike Emilia and Vicious. The things Emilia and Vicious did, because of their choices two lives were ruined. What a chaotic mess. Continue reading “Book Review: Ruckus (Sinners of Saint #2) – L.J. Shen”

Book Review: Vicious (Sinners of Saint #1) – L.J. Shen

Rating: 2/5 🌟🌟

Genre: Contemporary Romance (contains Explicit Content)

Review:

First off, I should point out that L.J. Shen’s a new author for me and I really liked her book, Scandalous. The writing was raw and the forbidden romance well done in Scandalous. Sadly, Vicious was a bit of a letdown. Continue reading “Book Review: Vicious (Sinners of Saint #1) – L.J. Shen”

Book Review: Scandalous (Sinners of Saint #3) – L.J. Shen

Rating: 4/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Genre: Contemporary Romance (contains Explicit Content)

Review:

I’ve had a thing for forbidden romances since as long as I can remember, excluding Romeo and Juliet however, because that was just plain a tragedy that could have been avoided. But I digress. I saw Scandalous, checked out the synopsis and I had to read it. Even though it was the third book in the Sinners of Saint series and I had yet to read the earlier books, it was Trent and Edie’s story I wanted to know most.
