Saturday Stars – 05 June 2021 – Miryem’s Staryk King

Hi, peeps. Post #2 of June. Do you like re-tellings? I haven’t read many but I love Naomi Novik’s writing which is a pleasure to read. And of course, let’s not forget the amazing characters she creates, like the Staryk King. 😍

Saturday Star: Miryem’s Staryk King
Book/Series: Spinning Silver – Naomi Novik

Miryem and the Staryk King are my favorite part of this book. I loved Miryem for the strength and courage it took her to retain her dignity and face down the people in her village.

The Staryk King is breathtaking! Yes, I have the weird tendency to fall for cold warriors with a lot of pride…and a boatload of honor and a penchant for fair deals. He’s infuriating but I love him lol.

Spinning Silver remains one of my favorite books. No matter how many times I’ve re-read it, it’s never enough. Not to mention my obsession with the Staryk King. 😉

Saturday Stars – 22 May 2021 – Elisabeth (Sorcery of Thorns)

Hi, peeps. Post #10 of May. If you read my FIFF post, you already know I’m obsessed with Margaret Rogerson’s upcoming book, Vespertine, which made me think of one of my favorite books, Sorcery of Thorns.

If you haven’t read it, you’re really missing out.

Saturday Star: Elisabeth
Book/Series: Sorcery of Thorns – Margaret Rogerson

Blurb: All sorcerers are evil. Elisabeth has known that as long as she has known anything. Raised as a foundling in one of Austermeer’s Great Libraries, Elisabeth has grown up among the tools of sorcery—magical grimoires that whisper on shelves and rattle beneath iron chains. If provoked, they transform into grotesque monsters of ink and leather. She hopes to become a warden, charged with protecting the kingdom from their power. Then an act of sabotage releases the library’s most dangerous grimoire. Elisabeth’s desperate intervention implicates her in the crime, and she is torn from her home to face justice in the capital. With no one to turn to but her sworn enemy, the sorcerer Nathaniel Thorn, and his mysterious demonic servant, she finds herself entangled in a centuries-old conspiracy. Not only could the Great Libraries go up in flames, but the world along with them. As her alliance with Nathaniel grows stronger, Elisabeth starts to question everything she’s been taught—about sorcerers, about the libraries she loves, even about herself. For Elisabeth has a power she has never guessed, and a future she could never have imagined.

Elisabeth was an absolute menace and I say that in the nicest possible way. She was klutzy and bookish and charming in her own way. Her love of books made me like her a whole lot. I enjoyed her thoughts and the way she saw the world.

Her connection to the grimoires in the Great Libraries was amazing. I envied that. Wouldn’t it be awesome to talk to books like that? & have them talk back? Wah, dream come true, right?

The courage she showed and her strength after all the traumatizing events she went through was admirable. I love characters like her and often these kinds of characters can elevate a book from good to great.

Saturday Stars – 08 May 2021 – Simon Doyle

Hi, peeps. Post #6 of May. So I’ve been thinking about my favorite characters lately and I decided to bring back my Saturday blog meme – Saturday Stars.

Today’s star is *drumrolls*

Saturday Star: Simon Doyle
Book/Series: The Search – Nora Roberts

Synopsis:
A canine Search and Rescue volunteer fights danger and finds love in the Pacific Northwest wilderness in this riveting #1 New York Times bestseller from Nora Roberts.
To most people, Fiona Bristow seems to have an idyllic life—a quaint house on an island off Seattle’s coast, a thriving dog-training school and a challenging volunteer job performing Canine Search and Rescue. But Fiona got to this point by surviving a nightmare: an encounter with the Red Scarf Killer, who shot and killed Fiona’s cop fiancé and his K-9 partner.
On Orcas Island, Fiona has found the peace and solitude necessary to rebuild her life with her three loyal Labs. But all that changes on the day intensely private wood artist Simon Doyle barrels up her drive with an out-of-control puppy, desperate for her help.
As Fiona embarks on training Jaws, and Simon begins to appreciate both dog and trainer, the past tears back into Fiona’s life. A copycat killer has emerged out of the shadows, a man whose bloodlust has been channeled by a master with one motive: to reclaim the woman who slipped out of his hands…

I’ve always had a soft spot for snarky guys and Simon is one of my favorites. He’s grouchy and surly and he guards his solitude like a secret service agent. He’s a wood artist and he doesn’t give a damn what others think of him. I love that about him, how he does what he thinks is best without letting others’ opinions affect him.

He knows who he is, what he wants, and makes no apologies. I can only wish to have even an ounce of that self-confidence.

And when Simon loves, he loves with all his heart, fully, completely, without restraints. Sometimes I wonder if I’ll ever feel that way. I don’t know but at least I can live vicariously through my favorite characters.

I just finished watching the latest episode of A Discovery of Witches and it has me scrambling to finish the book already so I’ll know what happens next! The suspense is torture lol.

Saturday Stars – 15 September 2018 – Reed Quartermaine

My Saturday’s over! Which means Sunday will be over in a finger-snap and dreaded Monday will be here to ruin my life. But, you know what they say (I don’t know who “they” are) enjoy the moment while it lasts. So, I’ll wring every second of enjoyment out of Sunday before I’m back in prison.

I found myself thinking of Reed today, one of my favorite characters and object of infatuation. So of course, I was bound to pull him in the limelight. 😉

I went to watch the movie The Meg with my cousins and it was highly entertaining. The shark scenes were well done and pretty cool. It was so much fun with my cousins. I had a blast. Also, I’m never going to the beach again and setting foot in the sea. 😉

Saturday Stars – 01 September 2018 – Seo Jung-hoo (Healer)

I’m re-watching one of my favorite kdramas – Healer (2014) and I still have stars in my eyes. Ji Chang Wook is just too cute in it. Plus, it’s through watching the kdrama the first time that I got so addicted to making origami lucky stars. 🙂

Saturday Stars – 28 July 2018 – Mavis Freestone (In Death series – J.D. Robb)

I’m binge-watching the series Into The Badlands and wah, it’s totally badass! The fight scenes are awesome. I’m freaking loving it. I don’t know why I waited so long to watch it.

I wanted to feature one of my favorite badass characters, Eve Dallas, but I’ve already done it, so I settled for Mavis for this week. 🙂
