Book Review: Legend (The Drenai Saga #9) – David Gemmell

Rating: 4/5 Stars

Genre: Fantasy, Adventure

Review:

At last, the famous battle at Dros Delnoch. The last stand of Druss the Legend. Reading the chronicles of Druss, there are so many battles in which he fought, the most memorable one being beside the Nadir. And now, Ulric, the leader of the Nadir, the one who had united all the tribes together, was at the walls of Dros Delnoch, intent of conquering the Drenai.

I found it a bit sad that Druss had grown old and was having to face dotage. It was tough for a warrior like him to face the fact that he was no longer strong enough, young enough to fight. His whole had been spent fighting wars.

But even in the last days of his life, Druss was still a legend. He had a talent very few have, the ability to inspire warriors to give their best, to fight for hopeless wars where only pain and Death lay in wait.

I really couldn’t see a way out for the Drenai to win this one even though I knew from the prophecies in the earlier books what the final result would be. The ending totally caught me by surprise, especially Rek and Virae’s. Once again, David Gemmell crafts a good story that keeps you guessing.

Synopsis: He is DRUSS the Legend. His skill in battle has earned him a fearsome reputation throughout the world and the stories of his life are told everywhere. But the grizzled veteran has spurned a life of fame and fortune and has retreated to the solitude of his mountain lair to await his old enemy, Death. Meanwhile, barbarian hordes of the Nadir are on the march, conquering all before them. All that stands before them and victory is the legendary six-walled fortress of the Drenai empire, Dros Delnoch. If the fortress falls, so do the Drenai. Druss reluctantly agrees to come out of retirement. But can even Druss live up to his own legends? Held by many to be Gemmell’s most iconic work, the book is considered a classic in the heroic fantasy genre.

I'm a die-hard bibliophile and I'm also an introvert. My blog's about books, books and more books. (yep, that was easy) I might, from time to time, write about life and its vagaries. I like taking pictures of books and doing origami.
